Feral Creature Editorial & Interview (Eugenie Grey)

Interview with Feral Creature (Eugenie Grey) | 2020AVE

Take a moment and peek into the life of this born-to-be superstar through our exciting interview below!

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself like where you grew up? Any siblings?

A: I grew up in the 'burbs of LA, in the city of Cerritos. I remember we would move almost yearly (it was a little hard on me since I could never keep the school friends I made) -- we moved from Cerritos to Fullerton to Cerritos to Maryland (yes, the state) to Cerritos to La Habra to Cerritos. I'm missing a lot of cities but I can't remember off the top of my head. I went to 6 elementary schools and 2 middle schools. I have a sister four years my junior, and she's blonde and into fashion as well. We live with my mother and my family has 7 dogs together. We're kind of addicted to rescuing dogs. The funny thing is that none of these are from the pound. All are from the streets! We find ourselves catching a stray or two monthly. I just found one last week and helped him find his human. The ones we have are the ones who we couldn't find homes for, whether it was with their original human or someone new. I love my little rejects.

Q: OMG, that is so awesome that you guys do that! Well, other than rescuing dogs, you also bring a refreshing presence to the fashion blogging world. What inspired you to start your blog?

A: I'm kind of a late bloomer. I actually barely started on January 6, 2013. I was getting great feedback from OOTD posts on Instagram, and to provide extra photos and direct links to the stuff I was wearing to people could shop my looks, I started fashion blogging.

Q: Where does your source of inspo come from when dressing on a daily basis as the "Feral Creature"?

A: Honestly, I'm not sure. I just wear whatever the eff I feel.

Q: Any style icons?

A: I'm not sure if she would be considered a style icon in terms of her actual clothing, but I admire Grace Coddington (the creative director of Vogue) so much. She has an incredible eye.

Q: Favorite fashion designer(s)?

A: Rick Owens, Dion Lee, Alexander Wang, Helmut Lang. You can clearly get a picture of my aesthetic taste.

Q: So when you're not taking fabulous photos, what else can we find Eugenie doing? Any hobbies or interests besides blogging and saving animals?

A: I'm actually still in school full time, finishing up my major in business management and minor in psychology. I'm also a creative director at a clothing company and I've been working for an international show production company going on 4 years. I really love reading and you can find me doing so on my downtime in bed with my dogs (which I have 7 of).

Q: Busy girl, you are! And, we have to ask… you have some of the most interesting tattoos. Where did your inspiration come from? Any favorites?

A: I had a feeling this would come up! My tattoos are neotribal / geometry / sacred geometry. I have to say that my favorite one is M.C. Escher's cube on my right thigh. That one still trips me out when I look at it.

Q: How many tattoos do you have?

A: 11!

Q: Has anything changed for you after you started blogging?

A: Oh my god. Everything! I never expected it to get this far, 2013 blew up for me. It's not even about the free clothes… It's about the learning experience, the fashion business savvy, the opportunity to show the world what I have to offer, and the incredible friends and kindred spirits I have encountered. Bloggers I met last year have truly become some of my closest friends.

Q: You're still super young, and filled with creative energy, what do you plan on doing after you graduate?

A: I hope to take on some international style projects that will take me all across the globe. Fingers crossed!

Q: Are there any new pressures you've experienced from being a fashion blogger that you've come across? And, do you have any advice/tips for fashionistas elsewhere who would like to start their own blog?

A: I'd say the only pressure is that you have to know how to manage your time well and how to stay on top of things. When you have a bunch of different collaborations going on at once, it's easy to slip up and forget something. I keep a pocket-sized Moleskine planner with me at all times so I always know what's going on. As for advice, the keys to having a successful blog are consistent posts, quality photos, and well-written (and error-free!) text posts. Having "good style" is ultimately subjective, so just be you and be confident and people will definitely respect you for it.

Also, the bigger you get, the more haters pop up. It used to discourage me in the beginning, but it helped me get a thicker skin, as a matter of fact. And although I hate to quote Chris Brown, a more perfect phrase has never been uttered: "I don't see how you can hate from outside the club, you can't even get in!"

Q: Speaking of Chris Brown… What types of music do you listen to? Who are some of your favorite artists? Favorite concert you've been to?

A: This is probably unusual, but I love classical music. Chopin, Beethoven, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky when I'm in the mood for it. I mostly have a thing for piano; some of my favorite piano works are Final Fantasy music played on the piano. My favorite concert ever was seeing Yo-Yo Ma play. He's a cellist and inspires me so much… I have every note memorized from his collaboration album playing Ennio Morricone's film scores. I really want to learn to play the cello someday.

Well, that concludes our interview! Thank you Eugenie for your time and spending the day with us at the studio!
